Dubrovnik's Old Town is defined by its encompassing city walls. The best time for walking the 2 kilometer perimeter is early morning as the old town begins to awaken. We will then exit through the Pile Gate, one of the two original portals to the Old Town, and board the open air bus which will journey through the old and the newer parts of the town, providing breathtaking views to the open sea.

We'll enjoy a light lunch at one of the city's favorite restaurants, where Nana, the owner, will prepare us a typical Dalmatian meal. With renewed energy we can wander the back streets of the Old Town visiting some wonderful shops, as well as down to the main promenade, the Stradun. We will stop at the Ronchi hat store where elegant hats have been handmade for the past 150 years. Marina Ronchi still utilizes the same methods of hat making her great grandfather used when he opened the doors of the shop in 1858.

People-watching is the national pastime of many local residents and there is no place better for a short break to have an afternoon espresso than the Grandska Kavana.

Then we will visit one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, dating back to the 15th Century, whose dispensary is still operating. The pharmacy is part of the Romanesque Franciscan Monastery which is home to the dome topped bell tower, dating from the 14th Century and dominating the western end of the Stradun.

Beyond the Pile Gate is Fort Lovrijenac, an 11th Century fortress protecting the entrance to the Old Town and the sea, which now serves as one of the most atmospheric and proclaimed venues for plays during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, well-known throughout Europe. The Orhan Restaurant, located at waters' edge of Pile Bay has a view of the Fortress Bokar and Lovrijenac and serve some of the best Dalmatian seafood platters in the region. As the sun begins to lower we end our evening at a local legend, "the hole in the wall", to watch the sunset from the tables scattered on plateaus between the city wall and the Adriatic, listening to soft music as we sip the local wine as the finale to our wonderful day in Dubrovnik.
